   About the show...
   A modern romantic comedy about a marriage...and a dog

Greg and Kate have been married for 22 years and are free of child-rearing responsibilities as they move to Manhattan.  Greg's career is winding down, but Kate's is taking off in new directions.

Greg brings home a dog that has found him in the park; the dog wears a heart-shaped tag bearing the name SylviaSylvia can be described as a 'major bone of contention' between this husband and wife.  Sylvia offers Greg the escape he so desperately needs, yet complicates Kate's life.  The marriage is put in serious jeopardy with a series of hilarious and touching complications.

With Sylvia, you may find yourself asking, "Is love an instinct?"  Pet lovers in the audience will find great enjoyment with the relationship of a pet and master.  Everyone will be guaranteed to learn from Sylvia, if you pay attention to what she's trying to tell us.  An additional message of the play is "we need pets as much as they need us".

Sylvia was written by Buffalo, NY playwright A.R. Gurney.  It was originally produced by the Manhattan Theatre Club in New York City on May 2, 1995 and starred Sarah Jessica Parker.  It later moved to Broadway's John Houseman Theatre, and went on to become the most produced play of the 1996-1997 season.
"...Dramatic literature is stuffed with memorable love scenes, but none is as immediately delicious and dizzy as the one that begins the redeeming affair in A.R. Gurney's comedy, Sylvia...."   ---NY Times

"... I can only call it one of the most involving, beautiful, funny, touching, and profound plays I have ever seen..."   ---NY Daily News

"..."Gurney's mad comedy is the most endearing good time to trot down the pike in many a moon.  Howlingly funny..."  ---Backstage
