GYPSY, a nostalgic look at vaudeville, burlesque, stage motherhood, a path to
stardom and other rough unveilings of life in show business, is based on the memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee.  It opened on Broadway on May 21, 1959 and starred the legendary Ethel Merman.  After a run of 702 performances the show has enjoyed multiple reincarnations including a popular film version starring Rosalind Russell and Natalie Wood.

GYPSY was knit together by three of the  brilliant craftsman who had created West Side Story: author Arthur Laurents, lyricist Stephen Sondheim, and Jerome Robbins, director and choreographer.  Add Jule Styne's memorable and powerful score and you have a wonderful slice of Broadway's best.

GYPSY---a portrait of a lady of burlesque.  A musical fable.  Theatrical life in the twenties and thirties.  It is an extraordinary blend of music, movement, rowdy comedy, powerful drama and all the arts of theatre.

GYPSY is one of the landmarks of American musical theatre.
